Mixed Company Theatre has been producing innovative, socially-relevant theatre as a tool for positive change since 1983.

Founded as an artist-run collective, today this nationally recognized not-for-profit is known for their commitment to inspiring communities across Canada to create social change through the theatrical practice of Forum Theatre.

Our most recent initiatives include the InterGEN Project, a three-year program to connect seniors and youth from culturally diverse communities across the GTA through creative workshops led by professional artists. The tales of family, migration, and cultural displacement that arose from these workshops were developed into two full-scale theatrical productions, Shelf Life and Spring Moon, that received national coverage from CBC News and OMNI Television.

Outreach Intern [Paid, Part-Time]

Duration: 15 Hours/Week; 6 month contract with strong possibility of extension
Rate of Pay: $14/Hour
Deadline for Application: October 1st, 2017

Key responsibilities include:

Creating and maintaining an up-to-date detailed contacts database.
Promoting our programming through phone and email to partner organizations and individual supporters/donors.
Seeking and engaging new community/ educational partners and audiences.
Additional administrative or creative tasks as determined in consultation with the General Manager, the Artistic Director, and/or Communications Director.

The ideal candidate will have:

Completed or is currently enrolled in a post-secondary program.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
The ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Knowledge or interest in theatre, particularly the practice of Forum Theatre or Theatre of the Oppressed.
Strong interest in a career in community engagement, arts administration, and/or education.
Knowledge of database management, graphic, and/or web design is an asset.
Multilingualism is an asset.
Experience in client relations or customer service is an asset.

Mixed Company Theatre presents SPRING MOON / 春明

This April, Mixed Company Theatre is proud to present the second installment of its InterGEN Project, SPRING MOON / 春明 !

Based on the real-life experiences of the Toronto Chinese community, Spring Moon tells the story of a resilient immigrant peoples through the eyes of three Chinese grandmothers who survived hardship and crossed oceans to give their granddaughters a better life. Although separated by differences of language, culture, and distance, the unconditional love that exists between grandmothers and their granddaughters is a connection that cannot be broken. Spring Moon reveals to us that to find out who we are, we will have to understand where we come from.

Spring Moon is an exploration of Chinese intergenerational relationships in Toronto and features community performers and emerging artists from across the GTA. The show was created with the input of Chinese youth and seniors from Eastview Community Centre, Scadding Court Community Centre, Broadview Manor, The Phoenix Arts Academy, the Markham youth and Toronto Community Housing.

The show is presented in Cantonese, Mandarin, English, and French with Chinese and English surtitles.

Mixed Company Theatre Dives into Intergenerational Exploration

A new community arts project reconnects youth and older adults in three Toronto communities

Beginning this February Mixed Company Theatre, with the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, will be starting an exciting three year journey towards creating two theatre performances that explore the relationship between generations old and young.

Come join us for our first workshop presentation on March 1st at Historical Lambton House, where community participants showcase scenes that highlight intergenerational issues and take in feedback from the community. Be sure to mark the date on your calendar!

With a growing gap in understanding between our generations, the need for more insightful and inclusive dialogue is becoming more and more apparent.

Collaborating with professional artists, community members will be able to participate in a theatre production that pulls real stories, ideas, and sentiments from communities and weaves them together into an art piece that explores intergenerational discord – and potential for new connections.

The project engages three distinct neighbourhoods and their community centres: Lambton House by the Humber Valley, Urban Arts in Weston Mount-Dennis, and Scadding Court Community Centre in Alexandra Park near Chinatown.

For the past 30 years Mixed Company Theatre has crafted unique forum theatre productions within the community as an interactive art form designed to create dialogue about social issues. This new Inter-Generational Project incorporates engaging and participatory approaches which use community workshops, mentorships, and learning opportunities for project participants.
