A Fine Line

By Heather Annis

An interactive presentation about Harassment

For Grades 9-12

How do teens negotiate their sexuality in a society that is hyper-sexualized?

Four students find themselves in the middle of a presentation about sexual harassment. Each with very different ideas and opinions, they explore the issues of relationships, feminism, gender equality and definition, personal boundaries and self confidence.

When two characters end up alone in the library, a line is crossed and the four friends continue a downward spiral where no one wins and everyone gets hurt.

Created in collaboration with youth and Empowered Student Partnerships, A Fine Line catalyzes dialogue about how students experience their world today and what they want to change.

Morro and Jasp...GO GREEN!

Created by U.N.I.T Productions (Heather Annis, Amy Lee and Byron Laviolette)

An engaging and entertaining look at being environmentally friendly

For Grades 1-6

Jasp has decided to write a book about ‘going green’ so that she can become a famous author.  There is only one problem: she doesn’t really know anything about what ‘going green’ really means.

When her sister Morro jumps in, the two decide that they need the help of Dr. David Suzuki. A letter from him soon arrives and the clown duo embarks on a journey to reduce their ecological footprint. Together, they struggle to learn how they can make changes in their daily lives and learn that, although not always easy, being environmentally friendly is certainly important and curiously rewarding.

This humorous look at being environmentally friendly turns assumptions about being green on their heads and teaches us that every little bit does in fact make a difference.  Seen through the eyes of loveable and laughable clowns, the messages hit home and become accessible like never before.

Project ACT

Written by Rex Deverell
A play about physical activity, healthy eating and substance misuse prevention
For Grades 7-9

Project ACT is an Ontario-wide three-tiered approach to empowering students to live active, healthy lives.

Part One:  Project ACT - The Play & Post-Show Facilitation - 90 minutes

Developed in consultation with youth and community partners, “Project ACT – The Play” follows four friends as they try to make sense of mixed messages about healthy eating, physical activity and substance misuse while turning their school into a healthier place. Each character relies on unhealthy coping mechanisms for the everyday stresses in their lives. A trained facilitator, or “Joker”, guides students to replace the actors on stage and to change the outcome. Whether on stage or watching their peers, it’s an immediate way for students to step into someone’s shoes and think about what they would do in similar situations.

Part Two:  Small Group Discussions - 45 minutes

After a short break, students are split into small discussion groups with local health and wellness experts. Their expertise in physical activity, healthy eating and substance misuse prevention will give students and educators the opportunity to discuss the issues in more detail, and link them with local resources.

Part Three: Activate Student Ideas - Ongoing

Project ACT continues as students put their learning into action. Our teaching guides and resources are designed to activate manageable changes to the student community, helping educators integrate healthy initiatives into schools long after we've left the building. Using Mixed Company Theatre’s website and the Project ACT Study Guide, staff and students have resources to organize initiatives to help make school a healthier place.

The Bully Show: CLOWN IN THE ROUND

For Grades 2-6

Created by U.N.I.T Productions (Heather Annis, Amy Lee and Byron Laviolette)

An interactive approach to dealing with bullying

Sisters, Morro and Jasp, are caught in the middle of friends and foes. As they deal with pressures from home, school, and their peers they suddenly find themselves competing against one another. Pretty soon there is a full-fledged bully in action. Not wanting to point fingers and get her sister in trouble, Morro attempts to deal with Jasp’s new-found power, and with the fear and hurt that she is now forced to encounter every day.

Cycling through various manipulations that can be used in any relationship, this show will highlight common elements of elementary school children’s experience with bullies. As the characters interact with the audience, they encourage the students to explore and suggest approaches to deal with bullies, as well as examine why people bully each other to begin with.   All of this, of course, will be presented through lovable and laughable clown characters, playing with and off of established archetypes and encouraging children to stand up for themselves and for others around them.

The 10% Reality

Written by Luciano Iogna
A play about bullying and homophobia
for Grades 7-11

The 10% Reality examines the effects of homophobia on young people who are trying to come to terms with their sexuality—and the bullying they and their friends sometimes experience as a result.

Sam is being bullied at school for being gay, and now his Dad wants to kick him out of the house. At school, his best friend, Tanya, has started to experience name-calling and bullying because of her friendship with Sam. After learning Sam may be gay, Tanya's father demands that she end her friendship with Sam.

Sam's battle is difficult, as he struggles to come to terms with his sexuality. Tanya, too, feels immense pressure. Staying Sam's friend will mean trouble for her at home and at school. Her other choice sees her abandoning her best friend to avoid the grief of being bullied at school and of defying her parents. What should she do? How can both friends stand firm about what is right for them? We ask students to help us find options for both Sam and Tanya.

Ryan is forced to choose between his best friend, Chris, and his girlfriend, Melissa. Ryan adores Melissa, but lately she’s been getting on his nerves to achieve high grades. On the other hand, Chris, who embodies fun, has taken to smoking weed before class - a habit that makes Ryan uncomfortable.

When Ryan, Chris and Melissa attend a party, they must choose how much to drink and whether or not to take drugs. At the end of the evening they debate who is sober enough to drive home. In an effort to please both of them, Ryan makes a decision that proves disastrous to all.

What if Ryan, Chris, and Melissa made different choices? What if their story didn’t have to end in tragedy?
